I don't think that's a liberal/conservative divide. I think that's a religious/secular one. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 30/03/2017 07:30:42 AM

I am equally repulsed by the idea of an eternity spent surrounded by automata, and there aren't a lot of people on this site more left-leaning than I. Even the various heresies I've entertained in my mind at various times tend towards a union with God so complete it largely eliminates personal identity, and that still falls more in line with the idea of union with a greater truth.

Come to think of it, I'm not at all sure religious/secular is a correct distinction here, either. There are plenty of religious people who believe in a self-centric afterlife; the LDS church springs to mind. Likewise, there are tons of atheist deontologists. Admittedly, the atheism bit largely precludes a belief in an afterlife, but I can imagine them being more in line with the "greater truth" concept.

"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."
