Are you from a culture in which it's standard practice to tip for services?
For somethings sometimes.
If so, for which services, and what's the standard where you live? What do you consider fair? Are there circumstances in which you wouldn't tip when you ordinarily would?
About ten percent for restaurant meals, dependent on how good the service is (and marks down for presuming to add it on to my bill - I well judge how good the service was, not you). Usually round up taxi bills. Offer to buy a barman/ landlord a drink.
Is it an expected thing for every visit or only at certain times of the year? When it comes to food and drink, is there a difference to you between restaurant and counter service?
All year around.
And yes. No tips for counter service.
Have you worked a job where tips are expected? Encouraged? Hoped for? Do you think this makes a difference in your perceptions to those of people who haven't? Do you remember how well (or whether) people tip and does this make a difference in how you treat them if they come back?
Nopes.
If not, have you traveled in places where it's customary? What are your thoughts on it?
I find it weird in the US - I can understand why it is seen as pretty much automatic as people rely on it to actually earn a livable wage but it seems like it is no longer a tip to me. A tip should be a reward for good service, not just a part of the costs added on at the end as standard.
There was a massive outcry over here when a newspaper listed places that were doing the same thing over here - including tips as part of people's wages instead of it being on top of them. I think everywhere quickly changed from doing that.
