The point was about polytheism versus monotheism The Shrike Send a noteboard - 02/11/2009 03:29:23 PM
To my knowledge, few Romans thought of Judaism in any way similar to the way modern people view Scientology.

Admittedly, Pliny and Suetonius call Christianity superstitio, but even that doesn't exactly mean "superstition" in the modern sense. Even if it did, that wasn't their opinion of Judaism.

You know perfectly well what the Romans thought about Judaism and then about Christianity. There are loads of sources, especially in Josephus' The Jewish War, about Jews who refused to recognize the Gods of Rome and the trouble that caused them. Especially once the emperors were considered divine. In a sea of Polytheism, you don't think that the Romans and Hellenistic peoples though that monotheism was an abhorrent aberration?

The goal of my earlier statement was to show that our present view of Scientology is truly no different than the Roman, Greek, and Jewish view of Christianity. A cult. And a bit of an odd cult at that, considering its stated monotheistic nature. But given the right conditions - economic or political or demographic - and a cult becomes a religion. Mormonism for instance is no odder or less odd than Scientology. And yet a century or so has passed and there is the faintest veneer of respectability surrounding it.

I beg to differ. Scientology is more ridiculous than the other religions mentioned. - 02/11/2009 01:58:44 AM 506 Views
To you, perhaps. To me it's a wonderful fantasy like the rest. No more or less believable. - 02/11/2009 02:19:17 AM 447 Views

Right. Unlike Christianity, which has harming your neighbor as one of its central precepts. - 02/11/2009 06:34:16 AM 428 Views
