While I will not say Buddist have never been involved in wars, you have to look pretty far back to find one with heavy involvement in fighting.
I think, though I'm not sure, the last time a major Christian denomination was involved in supporting/ promoting a war would be pre-1500.
Zen Buddists in Japan offered full support and backing to the Japanese nationalism during WW2.
And how you came with pre-1500?
For instance, the French Wars of Religion were during the 16th century. Or the wars fought by the Popes for territorial enlargement during the 16th century. Julius II, Leo X etc. Or also in the 16th century, one could easily argue that the wars between Catholics(Spain) and Protestants(England) were religous based and supported by the Pope, no less!
The Thirty Years War was in effect a war of power between Protestantism and Catholicism during the 17th century.
One could pretty much argue that the entire wars against the Ottomans was a Christian versus Muslim War - thus the wars of the 17th century, culminating in the battle outside the gates of Vienna in 1683. The succeeding battles, all supported by the Catholics were religious wars between Muslims and Christians.
