Ice ages and interglacial periods vary in length. The Snowball Earth one during the Cryogenian Period supposedly lasted for over 50 million years. And then there have been extremely long periods without any glaciation. To the point that the poles were temperate paradises.

As for going into one? I think we were supposed to be in one already or about to. But based on current trends that does not appear to be likely. And thank goodness!
