I don't know much (read: anything) about flying airplanes, but I suspect that since so much of a pilot's navigation is done by instruments, it's a lot easier for a computer to fly a plane than it is for a computer to drive a car. The fact that airplanes fly in more or less a straight line makes it a little easier. Try putting your car on autopilot and see how that goes. :P

There are things computers can do better than humans, but complicated maneuvers in a car isn't one of them.
