Should a politician in Reid's position expect people to kick up a fuss claiming it was? Very probably.
Unless he is completely disengaged from the real world, he must know that comments touching on race are always hyper-sensitive and likely to lead to accusations of racism... in particular when they come from an old white guy.
So, not racist just stupid for putting himself in a position where he was going to be accused of racism by opponents for their own political gain and his harm.
