even if there were no other jobs available and your only other option was mooching, then yes, I do think it sends a strong message that their job is "beneath you," and thus, a message about them.
I can think of a fair number of jobs I wouldn't do that people I'm friends with do, I don't think of those people as beneath me though. I even have friends who do/ have done what I and they thought of as crappy jobs yet they would have rejected a job like mine in turn.
