I have seen the AB in both the summer and the winter, in North Dakota, northern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan.
On the other hand, Tim who lives in Scotland which if further north than any of the U.S. has never seen it from his home.
I am curious why we in the northern US can see the AB but people in Scotland can't. I tried looking it up on Wiki but couldn't find anything.
Anyone have any ideas?

It was just Canadians shooting fireworks.
They don't do that North of Scotland, so riddle solved

You seem to be right - apparently the magnetic pole is on the northern Canadian islands.

The magnetic pole is in Canada right now so that could be a factor

Probably a combination of Edinburgh, light pollution and the fact it's almost always raining.
