I quite like Catcher in the Rye but I've never been able to shake the feeling a lot of why it is so famous and highly rated by some is that it has had plenty of controversy around it and Salinger becoming a recluse.
I also vote that anyone mentions deaths happening in threes gets punched in the head.

But it does seem from the obituaries that his later work wasn't as good, and that his personal life was a bit of a mess. I'm grateful to him - as are many people the world over, I'm sure - for that one brilliant book, though, and he's still achieved more than most writers ever do. RIP.
