Form my experience a lot of independents tend be on the outside of the political spectrum more then simply being in the middle. Not all of course but many of the now famous tea party people call themselves independents not republicans.
Most moderate republicans are turned off by people like Glen Beck.

it is just interesting given how a lot of pundits speak as though the independents are pretty much a block sat between the two parties. Which I guess in some ways is down to it being a two party system.
