the universe existed for billions of years before I came into existence. It will continue on for billions of years after I have departed. What is another 10, 20, or even 30 years of life from that perspective? No one is going to tell me I can't choose to exit when I want. If society is still not enlightened enough to make that choice simple when the time comes, then I will take care of it myself without involving or risking anyone else. The thought of submitting a request to some sort of oversight commission or committee for their review and decision makes me shudder.
I can see what you mean but it is a case, I think, of it being better than nothing. It would mean people could also be with their families at the end rather than alone, which would be of comfort to some people (both the person and their family)
