I don't think he's mischaracterizing anything so much as responding to Jens' point directly. Sareitha Sedai Send a noteboard - 10/02/2010 04:54:55 PM
Perhaps we all need food insurance. If healthcare-on-demand is a "right" then surely food is, too.

If someone can't afford to buy food of course they should be helped out by the state. Same with healthcare

But that isn't what Jens said. That isn't what a great many of the people at this site say. They find it crazy that anyone pays anything directly for their own healthcare. My point is, food and housing are at least as basic "rights" as healthcare. Yet, I don't think hardly anyone at this site thinks that giving higher taxes to the government and then having them allocate food and housing would be a good thing. Yet, for some reason, that seems to be the most widely held idea as a solution to healthcare at this site.

The solution most commonly put forth, in my experience, is single-payer, in which the government serves as the sole, nonprofit health insurance provider. People still pay for their own health insurance if they can, but the government is the middleman between them and health care providers, instead of for-profit companies. In some cases, the government will insure that necessary treatment is given without the patient being charged.

There's a big difference between this and the government actually funding all medical care through taxes, which seems to be what you're saying.

Jens said he thought people shouldn't have to worry about paying for health care when they're sick, when the fact of the matter is that we all have to pay for things that we need that we would rather not have to pay for. If my furnace goes out in the middle of the winter, I have to pay the several thousand dollars to replace it even though I would really rather use that money for more fun things. Things happen, sometimes very expensive things, and we have to do what we have to do to pay for them.
