Er, yeah, that's rather unprecedented... when I saw your title I first thought it was a joke, then that it was a bizarre FIFA move to tackle the rampant and rather unhealthy way in which teams like Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and others buy players nowadays (though then they could hardly have singled out Chelsea so). But as punishment for doing that, yes, very weird. I don't imagine the story will end there.


There is a prededent, it seems. The BBC have added more detail to their article - FC Sion in Switzerland are currently appealing a similar punishment for enducing an Egyptian player to breach his contract and join them.
The other big clubs you mention tend to rely on varying employment laws mostly - players can sign professional forms in the UK before they can in some other countries. So it is within the rules, just a little immoral.
