Go to a Greek-run place and it'll be called a "yiros" (the proper way to pronounce "gyro"). It's just that there are more Turkish-run places. And, in fact, I think some Greek-run places call it a "kebab" because that's the more common term and they know people will understand it. But in the Greek place in Cambridge they call it a "yiros".

P.S. Never say in a Greek-run shop that the Turks invented the kebab/yiros, or vice versa.

P.P.S. a gyro is a mini-helicopter. :P

I've heard all about it, except that I appear to be the only person w/in miles (same as in the states) who knows the correct pronunciation.:D I used to work in a restaurant that served gyros, and we had some guy try to order a gyro (like gyrate) on a piñata.

Kebab is meat roasted on a skewer, and then put into the sandwich. It does not involve a "stick". - 27/02/2010 11:00:24 AM 475 Views
Or, roasted on a skewer and put on a pizza. - 27/02/2010 11:29:55 AM 447 Views
