Not quite making fun, but I got a few odd looks. Michael Send a noteboard - 04/03/2010 10:13:47 PM
I am terrible for that, I've got a really nasty habit of picking up the accent of whomever I am speaking to. Often people think I am mocking...

Whether it's Dutch Dutch, Quebecois French, Andalusian Spanish or Scottish English. I don't speak any of those properly, but still I find myself unconsciously imitating aspects of it (okay, in the case of the French it's not unconscious, it just sounds nicer). I've never been accused of mocking, but I could see it happening. I have on occasion in the Netherlands avoided the problem by speaking English instead of Dutch, but that gets a bit ridiculous.

And I got some very funny looks when I was working in Indiana. But that might just be because I had the correct number of chromosomes.

They were making fun of you in Indiana? That's amusing...very, very amusing.

In Indiana, and the USA in general, I found I had to consciously adjust my speaking patterns a lot. As a west coast scot, I tend to speak very quickly, and the Americans struggled to make out what I was saying at all. But I also get the same problem in Aberdeen, so it may be just me.

It all depends what you define as accent. - 04/03/2010 09:51:11 PM 187 Views
