It is past time the genocide was recognised and it has been poor in the past that countries like the US and Israel used not recognising it as a bargaining chip with Turkey so it is good that the US has recognised it (has Israel? It would make sense as part of the ongoing spat between Israel and Turkey and might explain why the US has now).
The flip side of it is that Turkey has made clear, if steady, progress and the counter reaction to this could actually do more harm than good. It had taken clear steps on the path to officially recognising it happened and loosened up on people who refer to it but I can see more conservative elements reacting to this and it is a delicate time in Turkey given the army coup attempt arrests when the government needs all the support it can get.

How is denying the eponym's genocide improving relations with Armenia?

Modern Armenia looks at it rather differently than the diaspora does.

I imagine modern Armenia is more placating, yes.

Whether motivated by religion or pure nationalism allowing genocide to be denied is a bad precedent.

It's been denied for eighty-five years. It can wait five more.

I wish the Turks would just admit it on their own.

I agree. They just need to man up and admit it, apologize, and move on. *NM*
