I hope you're right Brian Send a noteboard - 08/03/2010 04:56:18 AM
I really do. I think DADT is likely to go away as well, and I hope that there are no major problems or major controversies. But like I said before, just going by what I saw while in the military I would guess that it's not going to go well at all.

Edit: Now that I have a couple more minutes, some other things to remember. 1,300 people is nothing. It's less than 1/10th of a percent of the active duty military in this country. If that number also includes people that were booted out of the reserves....well you get the point.

And as far as "Klinger" situations go. I don't care if straight people use it as a way to get out. If someone wants out of the military that badly, then they're going to find a way. DADT has just been a convenient fall back for those people.

As I said before, many of these discharges you could likely chalk up to something else. I'm sure there have been cases where it's been abused, where someone who was rightfully keeping it private and being discrete was kicked out because some homophobe found out by mistake and reported them. I would be willing to wager that a vast majority are people that for whatever reason outed themselves, or made their lifestyle so obvious that people had no choice but to take notice.

My point here is, that in spite of anyone's wishful thinking that DADT has some tangible negative effect on readiness of the military because it's depriving them of much needed soldiers....well it just isn't true. More people get out of the military in a single day due to the end of their contracts, retirement, or by resigning their commission than get kicked out in an entire year under DADT.

And finally, as far as that study goes...All I can really say is each of those countries are decidedly more liberal than the states, each has a considerably smaller military, and I suspect that none of them were involved in multiple wars at the time their bans were repealed.

I don't have a problem with it being repealed....I just hope that we don't find that it was something that was actually protecting people that are too stupid to protect themselves.
