They can tear down a politician or entertainer with immpunity, and undermine a player whose reputation depends a large part on media hype, such as Woods or Bryant (at that stage in his career) or Vick.


Exactly what "reputation" are you referring to here?

I would like to assume that you mean his "good boy image"?

But the way you worded that (w/ the extra comment on Bryant and including Vick) leads me to believe you are referring to Woods actual career reputation. Which would be ridiculous of course. If you're going to argue that Woods career reputation as the greatest golfer ever is a product of "media hype", then I have to call serious BS.
He had that reputation before he won a single significant tournament. Nobody cares about golf stars, and they wouldn't have cared about Woods before he was blown out of proportion.
