. . . generally speaking, it's always been obvioius to me that many people/cultures around the world don't see "others" as people, or they're viewed as less. And frankly, I'm surprised when people are surprised by that.

it is a basic principle in group psychology that outgroup members are seen differently than ingroup members. Still said, psychology might tell us how we act and maybe why we even act like we do but it doesn't declare that we should continue to act like that. That ability to choose is the beauty of controlled consciousness and free will.
