I second Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends.

I'm kind of looking into picking up a strategy game at some point, but I've always had problems with strategy games for a few reasons. One, I'm so used to playing RPGs, that the lack of substantial "story" and RP elements in most games tend to make me bored pretty quickly. Two, I'm not overly interested in logistics and mechanics and prefer to keep things pretty simple. If it gets too complicated and, yes, "realistic", I will simply find other ways to spend my limited relaxation time.
To give an idea of what I have enjoyed:
Lords of Magic
the Caesar 3 demo that came with Lords of Magic
Dragonshard
A lot of the "SIM" games (although the last phase of SPORE annoyed the heck out of me)
I also really enjoy the sort of "Stronghold building" aspects in games like NWN2 (original and Storms of Zehir)
In other words, what's a good Strategy Game for someone not into Strategy Games
Addendum: I do have a copy of Civ IV. when I initially installed it, I was annoyed that I couldn't do all the town-developing I could do in the beginning of Caesar 3 and wasn't inclined at the time to give it a shot anyways. I'd be more willing to do so now, but I'm still kind of sad I couldn't do as much town development

RTS or Turn-based?
How much do you like combat vs. city building?
For RTS, the classics include Starcraft, Age of Empires, etc. Rise of Nations was also pretty fun. Rise of Legends was pretty cool, too. Cross cultural stuff with magic/fantasy elements built-in. These are all combat oriented. They have multi-player capability as well.
There are also the games like Caesar, Pharaoh, & Zeus and the Sims series, which are more world-building types with hardly any combat. These generally do not allow multi-player (CPZ don't, I'm not as familiar with the latest Sims games).
Games like Starcraft and Age of Empires are heavy on the micro-management (not sure if that's what you mean by "realistic" ). RoN and RoL are less so. That is, if you're playing multi-player; if you're just playing the computer, you can beat it without breaking a sweat.
For turn-based, you really can't beat the CIV series, IMHO. CIV IV just has so much you can do. It is turn-based so the game goes much slower than Caesar. It takes forever to build a theater in CIV (in a small city), for example. But the depth and possibilities are so much greater. So many more choices, such as technologies, units, culture, etc. And in the later expansions, they also feature the espionage option, which is pretty interesting as well, since you can spy on other countries.
There are also games from the Total War series (Rome, Medieval, etc.) which are more combat focused than CIV. I like these too, but I guess I just like CIV more.
At last, I have an apostrophe!

If you're looking at Age of Empires-type games, I recommend Age of Mythology.

Ah, yes. That's another great game, from the same studios that made AoE.

AoM is great fun, but somehow it doesn't have the replayability of AoEII Conquerors, for me...

I'd warn her off Total War, but Starcraft is definitely a go. *NM*

If you liked the Caesar 3 demo so much, the obvious suggestion would be Caesar 3.
