It was a far smaller game, and without really any RPG elements to it - but cooperation was required to really get anywhere, and most of the fun was in wars between rivaling alliances.
And yes. The problem is that the raids take such a ridiculous amount of time and can't be broken up.

True, that does make it more impractical than many other games that are otherwise comparable. Requiring a number of different people to be constantly online for several hours straight at the same time is indeed difficult.
