I've heard complaints before, but most of them seem to boil down to "it was too girly." A lot of people really liked the return to the job system, and felt that the mechanics/gameplay were very solid. I checked on metacritic and compared to other Final Fantasy games, it's a little lower, but not much. 85, compared to low 90s for most of the others. Also, did you play all the way through X-2? I ask because the second half of the game was far more serious and less goofy than the early stuff. I think a lot of people may have tried it, seen that, and been too turned off the game to continue.
