If you don't mind the small screen the Alienware M11x is a steal at 599. There are some promo's out there where you can kick it up to 8gb of ram and still have it under a thousand.
The base level m15x would start at 999.
For non-gaming specific laptops you may be able to play around with builds from Dell, HP, or Gateway that would play games. Usually the graphics cards are going to be underpowered though, and it will still max out your price range.
Some other gaming laptops would be the Toshiba Qoismo(sp?), Origin Laptops, or Cyber Power laptop. Most of those are going to be outside of your budget even from the standard setup.
