The advantage right now is that 5-year-old consoles have made competitive hardware really cheap. That may change when (if...kidding) they ever release another, faster generation of consoles. For the envelope-pushing engines like Metro 2033 and BF3, you might struggle a bit w/o a new gen Quad CPU. But still, there are plenty of $130-200 GPUs that are more than adequate for most games out there. Couple one with some decent 4 or 8GBs of ram and you're set for a few years.
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
