No. Specifically, I was commenting on Baldur's Gate compared to Shadows of Amn. Fanatic-Templar Send a noteboard - 04/05/2011 07:04:55 PM
So obviously I don't believe every game has grinding.

And I'm not saying all of them were side stories, but there were side stories. They weren't LONG by any means, but they were there. And yah. Mages are squishy. They're ALWAYS SQUISHY. That's kind of the idea. They're generally a rougher class to play than a warrior, which is ideal for those who like to faceroll their fighting.

Not squishy. Useless. Well, quasi-useless. 1 spell per day, 2 if you've specialised. And either terrible spells or save-or-consequence spells. Although Charming Greywolf and using him to destroy everything else on the map is hilarious. But can you give me examples of these sidestories?

BG was very true to real RPGs. You don't always go off on an epic quest the whole time. Sometimes you need extra gold so you go do something else. Sometimes you're not ready to kill the dragon.

Strange you mention that since Shadows of Amn is the game that confronts you with a Dragon you're not ready to kill. Anyway, in what way is "I need gold, better head out into the wilderness hoping to find an employer!" very true to real RPGs?

Of course things like "level grinding" and "fetch/carry/kill" side quests are present. It's an RPG. It's the nature of the beast. What else WILL a mercenary be doing, pray tell? That's what an adventurer is, really. An explorer and a mercenary. It's not like people are going to ask you to fix them gourmet meals for gold. What do you really expect to be asked to do?

It's not that they're fetch/carry/kill quests, it's that they're nothing else. See my reply to Foxhead for details. But as for gourmet cooking, I don't remember any, but there is a guy who asks you to clean his pants.

As far as the main plot goes, I've played through it relatively quickly and ignored the side quests before. It's very difficult to do the later-ends of the plot line if you don't side quest, yes. But again, that's the nature of the beast. If you want to glide through every stage of a game without needing to spend some extra time, get an fps.

So, did you get any xp from killing that straw man?

I never played BG1 and still REALLY enjoyed BG2. The story seemed a clean enough break to "get it." - 02/05/2011 01:14:23 PM 530 Views
