Whether or not it'll swing "hardcore" (lol) gamers or not has yet to be seen. My bet is that it'll sell fine for casual and novelty crowds, but never quite catch up with Microsoft in terms of competitive multiplayer.
As for the name, I agree that it seems weird and Japanese... but so is the Wii. I'm pretty sure they went with Wii U with large consideration toward the visual branding. The U logo is cut out of the controller's shape.
