You only get monopolies in the mid to late game from Tech Advancement. Regarding Merchants, I would say Mercantillist is the way to go on sliders, especially if you're playing Expansionary or Colonial Empire. Playing full mercantile however means that its much harder for your traders abroad, so I would say just stick to your own COT and 1-3 others.
