In general, I haven't had to "work" to play at all. Just use a modicum of sense with the size of my mobs.
That could be because I'm playing a barbarian and I've gotten pretty good at smashy-smash melee classes...but still. I shouldn't get 12 levels in, have only one panic button smash moment, and only die once (because I got distracted by my animals misbehaving).
