The problem with character deaths is one I'm especially familiar with now too. That's my situation in Baldur's Gate. I know there's a spell there somewhere to resurrect party members, but I was too poor and shortsighted to buy it when I was in the city, and now I'm in a dungeon 20 hours away from it and keep having to save before practically each battle, and reload after most of them because so often a party member will die.

Raise Dead spells are divine, so you don't need to purchase them, you just need to have the level. Druids don't get it, but Jaheira has the equivalent Harper's Call spell. Of course, you only get that kind of experience in Baldur's Gate II, so for the entirety of the first game, you pretty much need not to die. Carrying a dead character's equipment is ridiculously annoying too. Thankfully Baldur's Gate allows you to save at any time outside of encounters.

Oh, and worthless scripted items in chests in dungeons.... That's awful! The only thing worse is loot in chests being randomized, with an extremely rare one-of-a-kind items appearing in only one particular chest in the entire game, with only a <1% chance of spawning, and if you miss it you're screwed and will never get that item. Because that's the system in FF12.

Damn, randomised loot is probably the dumbest thing. If you contrast Baldur's Gate to Neverwinter Nights, at least in the former you knew you were going to get good loot when you killed humanoid characters, since they were likely to be wielding magical weapons and armour. And Mages always had wands and scrolls. In Neverwinter Nights they'd just drop standard loot.

As for Final Fantasy, I've only played I, IV, V, VI and VII. And Tactics. And Mystic Quest (which is terrible). Actually, that's a fair number of games now that I look at it. VI is definitely the best. I love how the game actually gives you a huge cast of characters, and incentive to use many of them (rather than say, picking three and going with them any time you can, say Chrono-Frog-Lucca/Magus :P).

Giving old games a try years after their initial release? - 17/07/2012 02:32:57 AM 2012 Views
Psychonauts was worth it. The art direction helped it to age pretty gracefully, too. *NM* - 17/07/2012 03:07:54 PM 399 Views
Psychonauts is only 7 years old, so it's not that old yet - 17/07/2012 11:02:09 PM 673 Views
