Yeah, but as I was saying, you don't really need to know that much about them. Except maybe about the Underdark, the dark underground realms where the dark elves live (as well as some worse creatures - fair warning, the beholders and mind flayers are some of the nastiest enemies you'll face in the entire game), and where you'll end up at a later point in the game. As far as the surface lands are concerned, you just wander around Amn some, and only Athkatla really matters as far as factions and politics go, except at the very end and then things will become clear enough.

I know it's not necessary, and like you and F-T were saying further down this thread, it even fits in with the character and story. But I just like learning information about the game world! It's an important part of the gameplay for me. Although I typically don't read the books and things that appear in games, as they usually tend to be too slow and unrelated to the game and anything in it.

I was reading about a different old game a while ago - Morrowind, one of the predecessors of Skyrim - and the article mentioned something about how the total sum of all the in-game books in Morrowind added up to more than a hundred normal-length books. Crazy. At least the books in BG2 and successors are short...

I don't know about that, but Elder Scrolls games do have a lot of books in them, and Morrowind is certainly no exception. But while there are some history books, or lore books, lots of them are just random books with stories and accounts of adventures or battles that have nothing to do with anything, and so are easily skipped over. After all, if I wanted to read such things, there would be plenty of real books to choose from. Morrowind is well worth checking out though, and it should even run on your computer. You could pick up the GOTY version on Steam, and probably at a discount. The combat mechanics are a little dated compared to Oblivion and Skyrim, as are the graphics, but in all other regards the game is superior to them, and the outdated graphics and mechanics shouldn't be an issue for anyone that can play still Baldur's Gate!

If I recall right, you may be less fond of them by the time you get to the end of that quest. :P

You mean due to the guy who accosted me and wanted me to break into their guild? I turned him down, since it seemed like an evil thing to do. If it really does affect Jaheira's romance though, then I might do it. If nothing else it will provide me with some much needed experience points. I dual classed a Swashbuckler to a Mage in this, my very first game... So relatively easy experience is much needed, lol.

Chapters 2 and 3 of BGII do indeed somewhat feel like being thrown into the deep end of the pool, but on the other hand I found the free wandering around and doing quests in the order of your choice more fun than the far more linear later chapters... there are a few of those quests that are seriously hard and so not ideal if you try to start out with them (the planar quest starting in the theatre is one such), but on the whole it's amazingly balanced and cleverly done. Besides, it saves you boring traveling time - each time you enter a city neighbourhood, you can combine elements of several different quests, rather than having to walk across the city each time for each quest in succession.

I love openness, and being able to wander around and do other quests first instead of following a linear path. I just prefer to have to go to the huge hub area rather than be thrust into the center of it. Basically to be able to ease into the game and its quests a little before going into the thick of things. But BG2 is certainly not afraid to throw players into the deep end. The learning curve with spells is a testament to that.

Exactly! :P Although I suppose I may not stick to the xkcd plan that narrowly - when at some point I buy my next computer, obviously I'll get one that is more or less up to date, so I'll probably skip a few generations of games. Dragon Age 2 is already out, right? Maybe by that time even the next game in the series, be it Dragon Age 3 or something new.

DA2 is indeed out, along with several DLCs. Hopefully they'll soon release a GOTY or Ultimate Edition of it. And DA3 is supposed to be out in 2014, so not long now!

Giving old games a try years after their initial release? - 17/07/2012 02:32:57 AM 2012 Views
Psychonauts was worth it. The art direction helped it to age pretty gracefully, too. *NM* - 17/07/2012 03:07:54 PM 398 Views
Psychonauts is only 7 years old, so it's not that old yet - 17/07/2012 11:02:09 PM 672 Views
