it is probably morrowind. Now that was a brilliant game. It has aged rather badly though, and it was certainly not for the challenge it was great, but rather for the world, and the scope of it.

However, I feel I should give a multiplayer game some credit too. And I might be picking one that is rather odd... Stars! it was called, brilliant strategy game, and really quite challenging as long as you didn't play against idiots. :P I can't run it any more, something about playing a 16 bit game on a 64 bit system. :[
