I dunno, I'm pretty well informed on that subject. Aemon Send a noteboard - 15/06/2013 05:14:59 PM

View original postPeople with data caps are going to suffer from having to download such large files. People with slow internet speeds are going to suffer. The military is going to be flat-out incapable of using it—Nimitz-class carriers aren't famed for their robust Internet.

Why do they have to download large files? The games are still being distributed on physical media, same as always. Authentication is not a bandwidth issue whatsoever. Data caps, slow speeds and unreliable internet connections shouldn't be a problem at all, provided they're generally online the majority of the time.

View original postYes, for a typical suburbanite the log-on every 24 hours is relatively unimportant, compared to the other issues. It's still important, though. I can and do pull out my N64 to play drunken games with friends. Will MS release a patch releasing the XBONE from DRM at the end of the console's lifespan? Those servers aren't going to stay up forever.

This is probably not something you have to worry about. Firstly because, yes, they would almost certainly disable the authentication requirement if they drop complete support for the console. Steam has publicly committed to doing exactly that, should their service go under. Secondly because authentication servers take very few resources to run, and are not likely to be an expense worth worrying about for a company like Microsoft. This is especially true because computing resources get much, much cheaper over time, and players will decline over time.

Anyway. The scenario where your games suddenly become unplayable is very unlikely. Although not impossible.
