Not entirely sure how that happened; I'm not usually the type to bash my head against a difficult game until it gives way. But that's what happened to me with Guitar Hero 2 a few years back, and the skills don't really go away once they're there.
It all depends on the game for me. If it gets too difficult though I usually put it aside for awhile.
