If you beat a level in a typical RTS, you get more story, generally a cutscene or two, some new units perhaps, etc. You're progressing through something that keeps you interested. In civ, see everything the game has to offer within a 2-3 hour stretch. You don't have any story, cutscenes, or new stuff to look forward to, just yet another pop-up of George Washington asking if you'd like to trade your fusion technology for everything he knows about pottery.


Maybe that's where the confusion is setting in: comparing Civ to an RTS. Besides, being the first to discover gunpowder and having your cities defended against anything that can be thrown at you for the next two hours is immensely satisfying. Good planning produces good results, whereas a normal RTS, though much faster and more intense, always boils down to the same mission types.

Anyway, you know me: I'm totally beyond the desire to experience a videogame "story". Cutscenes were amazing back in 1998, but nowadays they're no big deal.

That said, bring on Starcraft II (and even more hopefully, Warcraft IV someday)!
