Mega Man 10 Zalis Send a noteboard - 02/03/2010 03:48:49 PM
Any other retro/8-bit fans out there? I grew up on these games, and Mega Man was a staple of my early gaming diet.

Mega Man 10 released yesterday on WiiWare. Here are my impressions so far, 2 bosses down and 16 minutes of play time logged on a save:

Music: Not quite as solid as MM9, but not the worst in the series. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by future stage themes, but Sheep & Pump Man's were meh. (Okay, I just listened to Nitro Man's stage, and <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4L3UEK-Wwg>it doesn't disappoint</url>;)

Difficulty: (**Robot Master order spoiler here- my first two, anyway) Maybe I got lucky in selecting my first two bosses, but Sheep Man and Pump Man were both relatively easy bosses with average difficulty stages. I think I died once in Sheep's stage, once in his boss fight, and had no trouble at all with pump man. I'm no Mega Man pro, but I did beat 9 when it came out.

Graphics: Very representative of late-era NES stylings and color palettes. By that, I mean it's bright and, at times, a little ugly for being so. The upside is that the overall detail level has been raised and effects have tons of pixel detail packed in. MM9 was very solid, visually, though more conservative.

Gameplay: Seems like each level is has more puzzle elements, which is good... so far. Too much could make the levels as easy as the boss fights. (which is to say, easy once you learn the pattern) Levels have always had patterns, whether it was enemy movements/spawns, etc, I suppose it's just a shift from pew-pew to more puzzles.

Overall: Again, I'm not very far in, but it shows real 8-bit/retro promise. Mid-20s suckers like me, especially those of us who appreciate a real challenge, will eat it up.
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
