Quickpoll for 7th March 2010

How many chances do you give an author who's books you don't enjoy, before you refuse any further attempt to read them.

One (If the first book stinks, never again.) (46.58% - 75 votes)
Two (Everyone deserves a second chance.) (44.72% - 72 votes)
Three (I like to make sure it's not just bad luck) (5.59% - 9 votes)
 Four + (They're bound to have a good one eventually...) (3.11% - 5 votes)
1 or 2
ie Stephanie Meyers. Twilight is a travesty, but The Host is pretty good.

I can't understand that.

First?
Almost always two. Sometimes even three. *NM*
Depends
If the first book is THAT bad I might just stop before finishing it. Like R. Scott Bakker's so bad I stopped 50 pages into The Darkness That Comes Before. That was just unreadable. But like Robin Hobb's awful too, but she was at least readable. So I gave her the ENTIRE Assassin's Apprentice trilogy to try and wow me. I figured maybe it was building to something I'd care about. But unfortunately it didn't. The whole trilogy was so utterly boring and meaningless I've vowed to never give her another shot.
Well with Goodkind it only took one book *NM*
Usually none. I rely on others who read them first.
But when I pick out a book that I know others think is great but I'm just not into it, then I'll probably give the author one more chance. I did that for Neal Stephenson after I gave up on Quicksilver, and boy am I glad I did. Anathem rocks.
