It's not something one is likely to catch in a first read through, and even a reread might just lead to a bit of head scratching,

Whereas a not-at-all-read-but-actually-listen gives you delusions about what is not actually in the books.
but once you start actually looking for it... It's all over the place.

From the prologue of EotW, to the fight at the end of TDR. Traveling was depicted as simply instant teleportation.

Like when Lanfear was following Rand around in Fal Dara. The whole "watching eyes" bit.
What evidence is there that this was going on? I don't remember anything of the sort. Did RJ or someone from Team Jordan confirm somewhere that is what was going on?
Post-retcon Traveling wouldn't of even been able to do half of those sudden jumps. But it is even more blatant when Rand himself does it. He is simply one place, and then another. Without any mention of Gateways.
The first time Rand Traveled was in tFoH, when he opened the Gateway to Rahvin in the Palace in Caemlyn. The first time he ever saw Traveling was Aviendha opening a gateway in their room. The only time he teleports is from the Green Man's place which does not obey the laws of space and time. People say it moves, by Someshta insisted that the place never moved, all that changed was the location of those who needed to find him. Just like in T'A'R, you can instantly teleport someplace, and you can get to a place you know nothing about by having an urgent need (and that need is not reproducible: you can't find the Green Man or the Eye of the World twice, just like Nynaeve & Elayne could not find the Bowl of the Winds twice). Whatever the reason and mechanism, the Green Man's place fits in with a different set of rules, which explains Rand moving from the hill where he fought Aginor to Tarwin' Gap. Note that to get from Tarwin's Gap to confront Ba'alzamon, he had to Skim.

Why it is easy to miss though is pretty simple. We the readers simply never get formally introduced to Traveling until after the retcon.
No, we were introduced by the mention of it happening in the prologue to EotW, and tended to make assumptions, such as the one you made about Rand at the end of that book.
