Which as usual, makes several valid points.

Yes, when one calls 911 at night to report a suspected crime, it is not a good idea to run at the approaching police car with an object in your hands. They will ring your doorbell once they feel secure enough to leave the car. Wait for it.

It no doubt was a younger officer who fired, because as you so astutely point out, no veteran cop ever fires his weapon unless there is no avoiding it. Particularly in such an unsafe and unauthorized manner as across your partner. The interviews and paperwork in the aftermath of any shooting are a nightmare. All the more so when someone is killed an procedure wasn't followed.

The story about your hometown "hero" cop made me laugh. All city and state workers count the days till they have their 20 like criminals serving a jail sentence. Cops probably most of all due to the assumed inherent danger of their jobs, even if they work in wealthy suburban towns where the only time they ever fire their weapon is at the practice range. My town, the geographically smallest in Connecticut, also has multiple policemen who make over 100,000 per year. No doubt many of them have the same dissatisfaction with their careers as your cop.

Not all cops are murderers. Nor are all cops heroes. Many are assholes who get off on the power. Many others are nice guys. Maybe the asshole ratio is a little bit higher than other fields because of the power trip. But probably not all that much. Assholes are everywhere.
