Also, stone houses don't stand up to hurricanes much better than wooden ones. You're protected from wind damage to a certain extent, but framed houses generally lose their roofs first anyway, so it's not going to be of much use. And gutting flooded stone houses would be a nightmare.

Incredibly cheap and quick to build. Wood, unlike stone, quite literally grows on trees.
