The MMA fighter is a different man.

The writer has been with SI since 2004. He has a BA in history from Yale and a masters of international relations philosophy from Cambridge.

So maybe he uses terms like etiolated in conversation. Maybe he doesn't. Still inappropriate for this venue. You're right, the editor should have changed it.
