For me, the first book in the series that I actually had to wait for (and hence also the first one I bought in hardcover) was WH, and that one I really liked. Like many, I was disappointed by CoT, but I'm not sure now to what extent that was due to any objective failings of the book, and to what extent it was just because it wasn't what I expected.
