"How could Aunt Becky do this?" Cannoli Send a noteboard - 15/03/2019 08:17:17 PM

Regarding the implication of Lori Loughlin in the recent college admissions scandal, there have been people stating my subject line, referring to her character on the TV show "Full House."

Ignoring the pedantic and trite distinction between the fictional character and the human actor, I feel compelled to point out that it's still a ridiculous sentiment.

I have not seen an actual episode of "Full House". Once, at my grandmother's house, my aunt watched a scene in which someone made a mess and Bob Saget walked in, and stared slack-jawed in one of the worst mugging affections of shock and horror I have ever seen by a successful professional actor, and my aunt (in her 70s) chuckled and said "He's really neat. That's why he's upset now." And that was all I ever needed to know about the show. But from what I understand, the adults were all loving parental figures to the children, who included the Scarlet Witch's creepy older sisters when they were young enough to be cute. It was a light-hearted family comedy, with half-hour story arcs, no real consequences and character flaws were there to set up punchlines not drive tragedy.

Now, Lori Loughlin is not actually accused of something inherently immoral. She is accused of breaking a rule. She did not harm anyone or deprive them of anything to which they were lawfully entitled. And no, "a fair shot at a place in USC" is not something anyone is lawfully entitled to, which the government made clear when affirmative action became a part of the admissions process.

So really, "Aunt Becky" acted in a rather hilariously over-the-top fashion, in order to get her daughter something, that, when viewed rationally, is probably not worth the trouble, even without figuring in legal consequences. Isn't that EXACTLY the sort of thing a sitcom character does on a weekly basis?

Another way to look at this issue:
Lori Loughlin: "To get my daughter into college, I spent an obscene amount of money on bribes."

Normal parent: "I was obsequious toward, and jumped through hoops to meet ridiculous criteria set by, employees of a college."

Lori Loughlin: "You ought to be ashamed of yourself! Have some self-respect."
