This may not be fair, but I blame old man syndrome, by which I mean...

No one voted for Gerald Ford* to be vice president before he became President. Instead it went before Congress to vote for the replacement. And prior to Nixon nominating Ford he went before Congress and Democratic Speaker of the House Carl Albert played hardball forcing Nixon to pick Ford saying they would not allow any other choices and embarrass Nixon in the process. This was during the 2 years of Watergate scandal.

*Former Vice President Agnew resigned due to corruption. Note he was corrupt for decades as Governor of Maryland and so on. There were several newspaper who investigated him and had good evidence but did not print it because they lacked the smoking gun way back when. His 70s stuff thus re-contextualize how Agnew was always going after the press saying they were unfair to Conservatives. Now many people attacked the press saying they were unfair to Conservatives but it was Agnew and to a lesser extent Patrick Buchanan who coined lines of attack against the media such as "Enemy of the People" and so on. Agnew created a successful blueprint that later Conservatives made even more popular.

So yeah the whole 70s thing with President and Vice-President created a trauma, a trauma that if you lived during that time you would be less trustful of government and want everything to be "ideal" with how the process of selecting a president and a vice president to be. Many people fear a repeat of the traumas of the past, that is the nature of being human.

So old man syndrome not because there is anything wrong with this logic or analysis it is merely because Mookie has different life experiences than us who were born in the 1980s and later.
