Are we talking content or the form of it all? Roland00 Send a noteboard - 29/10/2022 11:22:50 PM

I heard Daredevil was going to be in the show because they are both lawyers, and I saw a bit halfway through an episode, where Daredevil has a completely different costume than he had in his actual show, or the Ben Affleck movie or a Daredevil comic book I read once when I was 10 or 11. They gave him a completely different costume, and She Hulk mocks him for wearing it. It's not like this is a plot point that Daredevil has changed his costume, they simply gave him a different look for this show and then proceeded to say "haha, Daredevil's costume has a bad color scheme." It reminds me of the arguments on line as to whether or not women are actually funny, and the first Captain America movie, where they play it as a combination of badass and funny, when Peggy Carter responds to an American soldier sneering at a foreign soldier on an elite American military base, by ordering him to hold still so she can punch him. This joke on She Hulk is basically that. So maybe women really are not any better at being funny then they are at fighting.

By the way, the joke, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, established in 2008 with the movie "Iron Man" and then a second Iron Man movie before too many others had come out, mocking Daredevil's alternate costume is that it is like Ketchup and Mustard. In other words, Red and Yellow. Like the founding superhero of the entire setting?

Also, the fact that they are both lawyers comes out when Matt Murdock shows up in court to defend a guy She Hulk is suing. Her client was injured by the superhero costume Murdock's client (a bland take on the Edna character from The Incredibles) made for him. She calls him an asshole for basically doing his job and objecting in court to something she tries, and the judge throws the whole case out when Murdock smells that her client used the wrong type of fuel in his costume. I don't know much about law or trials, but I suspect the legal proceedings of the show are just as bad as the CGI. Or the humor.

laughs for this type of critique is the essence of the show. What annoys you is actually what causes other people enjoyment.

Going back to the John Buscema, Stan Lee, John Byrne and the other people who have penned the character since the 80s. She Hulk was a character created due to the success of the 1977 CBS Hulk show, and similar shows in the late 70s such as the six dollar man, and the bionic women. All three of those works being created by Kenneth Johnson the filmmaker and executive producer and the bionic women being a spin off of six dollar man.

After the success of the show Marvel reviewed their IP contracts and they realized if the CBS show introduced a female hulk they get the IP of a Female Hulk and thus Jen Walters was a protective way of asserting the trademark in a defensive fashion.

But once a single comic book was published Marvel reviewed the idea and decided to go in a different direction. There are layers here and how one can introduce a self aware character who pokes fun at the content and form of it all and how the layers constantly change. That is the 4th wall breaking insight. The meta / post structuralism of it all.

Law is so much artifice, nonsense, rules, and formalism that it is a perfect thing to mock and highlight the nonsense of it all. Not just the nonsense of Super-Heroes.

But what is new and novel in moderation in the 1980s with She Hulk, or 1970s with Monty Python, or the 1990s of The Simpsons…well it is now the dominant way to talk about culture so you are either going to find She-Hulk to be delightful or the most annoying and grating thing to ever watch. But hey in 2022 there are over 500+ different scripted shows per year so one does not have to watch it.

Then again who knows how many shows will come out in 2023 and 2024 for we are in a recession and also not a recession and many of these content companies such as Disney, Netflix, HBO are reconsidering what they green-light as new but what they also renew for further seasons.

She-Hulk was fine for me. I think the only Marvel thing I truly enjoyed since Black Panther and Thor 3 was WandaVISION and the Hawkeye tv show (I like Kate, and I like to see MCU Hawkeye suffer.)
