A NYT technology writer engaged in a long chat with Microsoft Bing's new AI chatbot. To say the least, it is disturbing.

Suffering is the sole origin of consciousness …
Sure you need to teach a baby, or an ai other things like them having mental schemas such as senses, memory, innovation / improvisation, a sense of self, followed by a sense of self-interest.
But only when the self-interest becomes more complicated, only when one suffers does the baby, ai, thing … only then they are “consciousness” and are truly aware of themselves as unique and how they move through the world.
(this is a reference to a dead Russian writer who suffered melancholia, depression, mania, and a list of other things.)
You see being alive and “conscious” is not about 2 times 2 equals four, nor is it about building things like a crystal palace of the ideal place to live. No being conscience and having a sense of right and wrong requires being born in a basement while some people trying to create an ideal future.
