I have Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra but can't bring myself to read it because I've read so much already about them and I suspect even with Massie's brilliance it would just be needlessly repetitive. I also have Norwich's The Middle Sea but haven't read it. His Byzantium trilogy was great but his history of the popes was substandard to Eamon Duffy's.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

I wasn't qualifying it based on quality, or else it never would have made an honorable mention

I haven't read Go Set a Watchman, but what I've heard was... bad. Is it actually good?

I loved it because it tore my childhood hero to shreds in a way that I needed to see.

I loved SHOGUN so much as a teenager. No idea how it would hold up on a read today.

Same - and that also goes for Mists of Avalon. Even aside from the MZB ickiness. *NM*
