The primary process ensures the Democratic nominee has to pander to the most politically active segment of the party, which is the Left. With no Electoral College, the Democrats will invariably win because they get overwhelming numbers in the big cities. In my blue state, cities of over 100,000 vote 90% Democrat.

It makes no difference how many people across the country want a centrist President if the Democrats sweep NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, San Fran, etc. They're gonna get whoever the Dems nominate.
