But, it gave me such delight, that I almost don't care. Even if one were to grant that it didn't QUITE belong, it wasn't such a departure so as to ruin things as other Disney and Amazon shows have done. It wouldn't have even been off enough to rise to the level of minor irritant.

I do agree it was at least partially fan service and wasn't NECESSARY to the show (especially given the limiting nature of only 2 seasons), but again, sometimes things are just too delightful to regret.

I will say, as to why Dedra may have been dreading the dinner even if she had a trump card: she actually cares about Syril and knows how much his mother upsets him. Clearly, Dedra and Syril don't have a relationship of equals. He has a beautiful heroine he can worship who can replace his mommy somewhat. She has an attractive "boy" for whom she can be the dominant partner. And someone she can trust who has many, to her, admirable qualities.

So really, it does add to the flavor of the story and over the final 9 episodes maybe that will play into thing, as it helps to flesh out their relationship.

We shall see!

Also, agreed to the episodes maybe being a bit disappointing. I loved the first season so much I binged it in 2 nights to prepare for the season 2 premier. So, maybe no matter what we got, it may have disappointed us? Who knows. I still really enjoyed it and think it is far better than most of the slop offered to modern audiences.
