This year is the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was released in May of 2005. Also, of course, the unofficial holiday of Star Wars is May 4th. So May 2025, is the perfect month in which to release RotS into theaters again.
Naturally, Disney released it in April, and only in April. Because Friday, May 2, is the official release date of Thunderbolts*, which means that it's actually in the theaters on Thursday, May 1, because it's a way to the inflate opening weekend box office take. And for some reason, this run of RotS had its last showing on April 30th. It's still a couple of weeks until the 20th anniversary of the actual release, and the film is gone from the theaters.
The only explanation I can see, is that even though they own both movies, and even though the box office take of both Thunderbolts and Revenge of the Sith goes into Disney's coffers, they yanked the extremely successful Star Wars re-release, in order that it not distract from Thunderbolts, or negatively affect that film. Now, of course, the one is a Lucasfilm production and the other is a Marvel production, so you can see why the powers that be in the latter who prioritize protecting their baby, but Disney is in charge of both? Why would they favor the one they fear won't have the drawing power of the other? If you have a property that you can keep putting in the theaters and making money 20 years later, well, hell, isn't that the dream for an entertainment company?
Except George Lucas made RotS on his own, Disney had nothing to do with it, and Thunderbolts* is their own creation. They are metaphorically cutting off their nose to spite their face, they are sacrificing income rather than make more money off work produced by someone else.
